On Jan. 29th/30th 2011, in Tokyo, there will be Tobaku, the first International Bondage Event organized in Japan. Tobaku is an event organized by

Ichinawa-Kai, Hajime Kinoko's kinbaku group.
KabukiJoe had previously interviewed Kinoko-san for his blog, and what better occasion to do a new video one than his first international event? Last time I only did the translated transcript, but this time, I was the interviewer!

The Nawaya Toubaku international bondage event will be held in Shibuya, Tokyo on January 29-30 followed by a week-long kinbaku workshop from February 1-7.
The event is being organized by young rope artist Hajime Kinoko. Rida and I had the opportunity to conduct a video interview with Kinoko-san awhile ago to get the low-down on the event. Tomitake-tei (富竹亭, Tomitake Hall) on Bashamichi-dori, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, a stone’s throw from Yoshidabashi Bridge. The theater, which was active through 1912

(Taisho 1), was owned by Takejiro Takeuchi (竹内竹次郎), who ran three other yose theaters in Yokohama.
Tomitake-tei opened in December 1878 (Meiji 11). One of the theater’s first performers included the now largely forgotten Australian born rakugo story teller and kabuki actor Henry James Black (1858-1923).

Black performed as Kairakutei Black (快楽亭ブラック), but was also known as Ishii Black (石井貎刺屈). His father was John Reddie Black (1826-1880), publisher of several newspapers in Japan, among which The Far East and the Japan Gazette.

英語版年賀状です。

実は、mixiで管理コミュニティが３つもあったのですが、５年くらい放置したままでした。さすがにこのままではいかんなと思い、思い切って名称や方針等を運営しやすいように改定しました。
１．「BONDAGE DID 隷嬢寫眞館」
２．「猿轡・ＧＡＧ・口枷の杜」
３．「Ball Gag」
このうち１．は、私が試験的に立ち上げたもので、文章中心のコミュにしようと思ってましたが、今風に画像鑑賞中心に作り替えました。他の２．及び３．は、他者から成行きのまま管理人を引き継いだものでして、発足の経緯はよくわかりませんが、数年間更新ゼロに等しいこともあって、これらも画像鑑賞中心にしてしまおうと思います。２．は口枷とよだれをテーマにしたものでしたが、範囲が狭いため、参加者も動きづらかったのではないでしょうか。そこで、猿轡やＧＡＧ類全般を扱えるような体裁に替えました。３．はファッションとしてのボールギャグのみを対象としてアダルトを排斥しておりましたが、これも幾分無理があろうということで、アダルトＯＫに切り替えました。３．は２．のボールギャグ特化版として位置付けていただければと考えます。さらに１．はもとから非公開扱いでしたが、２．と３．は誰でも参加可能な扱いでした。しかしながら、mixiが誰でも登録参加出来るようになった昨今では、一応非公開扱いにしといたほうがよいかと考え、非公開承認制に切り替えました。
そのうち、mixi事務局からお取り潰しの沙汰が下るまで、細々と運営していこうと思います。mixi参加者で上記コミュニティ参加希望の方は、「着装文化工房で記事を読んだ」と書いていただければ無条件に参加許可いたしますので、よろしくお願い申し上げます。
ちなみに、２．「猿轡・ＧＡＧ・口枷の杜」では本日より「猿轡・ＧＡＧ・口枷の好みについて」のアンケートを始めております。お好みのものについて是非お教えいただければと存じます。

ところがこれが発表中止にならなかった。６６年の７月に若いM青年を得て、５枚組７組、計３５枚が上梓されます。１～２０は７月に発表されたものです。
エッ？　Ｍ青年の名前ですか？　知りませんよ、そんなもの。

A very quick post, before I collapse, to say thank you to everyone involved that made this the best festival yet. It exceeded all our expectations. So many people put so much into making this happen, they jumped in whenever the inevitable crisis occurred and worked beyond the point of exhaustion. It’s a sharp learning curve and each festival brings new challenges. The support has been fantastic. It was very gratifying how many people thanked me for being part of creating the event; it made the whole occasion so much more personal, almost like a private party. Of course, in many respects, it was like a private affair as all the performers were not closeted away back-stage or in VIP areas, they socialised freely with the visitors and tied quite a few.

Finally, thank you to all our visitors who were so important in creating the warm and intimate atmosphere.

Alert reader NuitdeTokyo has sent in the following interview with the late grandmaster Akechi Denki. What makes this contribution so special is that the interview first appeared more than 30 years ago in a little-known magazine called Venus (now defunct).

NuitdeTokyo reports: Inspired by the extensive bibliography in Master K’s recently released book “The Beauty Of Kinbaku” I found myself bargain hunting for rare books and facsimile in downtown Tokyo, when I came across this little magazine. It featured a very sexy vanilla cover, but the inside was exclusively SM content. This issue of Venus is probably from around 1976, and to my delight it carried an interview with Akechi Denki at a time when the full talent of the maestro was yet to be discovered; at a time before he had started doing public performances – yet was already active for 20 years in the Shibari scene.

Last night I shot with Z. Maitri, the famed bondage photographer who is best known for his use of lights to create real-time photo effects. He and I have been friends for years and shoot together whenever he’s in town (SF).

What makes my relationship with Maitri unique is that with him, I’ve chosen to present my “kinbaku-bi” or traditional shibari styled work. I do not claim to be a master of this form of rope art (in all truth I am not), but I do love playing with themes. And so, in short, last night Yumi Y (model), Z. Maitri (photographer) and I (rigger) played, and this is what we created.

p.s. When I’m rigging for a shoot (and not planned to be in the photographs), I dress pretty casual (jeans or sweats, t-shirt or sweater, usually no shoes). Just before we wrapped for the night, Z. asked me to jump in this shot. As we were looking over the images we produced, Z. commented that I’d blocked Yumi’s best lighting (he was joking).

Master “K” has done it again! This book is a masterpiece. The mother of all books on Kinbaku/Shibari. It’s the yardstick with which all future books on the subject will be measured.

Not even in Japan do they publish such comprehensive, all-encompassing work. The author has spent years researching original sources, checking facts, translating rare documents, and interviewing key figures. The result is a sensational book that will forever change how Westerners view Shibari.

This book is such an interesting read and offers such a wealth of information, that its appeal reaches far beyond the rope community.
